Testimonial

"The students and staff of Marist College were privileged to hear the insights of Sam Bailey and his wife Jenny. You could have 'heard a pin drop' as 150 students sat riveted to every word. Drama, humour, wisdom - the speech had every aspect of a genuine life changing experience. A wonderful opportunity for any young person on the cusp of adulthood" - testimonial from Marist College principal Mrs Marie Martin.

Toowoomba talks both had NT connections

There were double connections to Sam's time as a jackaroo, working at "Avon Downs" in the Northern Territory back in the 1980s, when he spoke at two schools in Toowoomba. When Sam spoke to Year 8 and 9 students at Toowoomba Grammar School the audience included the son of the 'Avon Downs' former camp cook, Sandy. She was working with Sam at the time of his accident in 1987 and has stayed firm friends. She and her husband Nick Thorne live near Adelaide River, below Darwin in the Northern Territory and their eldest son, Sam (named after Sam Bailey) is a boarder at Toowoomba Grammar School. Sam Bailey is pictured above with some of the students who heard his talk including (l-r) James Bailey, Jordan Campbell (back), Ned Caskey (front), organiser and teacher in charge of Pastoral Care, Lynne Yabsley; Sam Thorne (front) and Hadyn Grantham (back).

Sam also spoke at St Saviour's Primary School at the request of teacher Megan Wagstaff. She grew up at "Avon Downs", where her father Geoff Wagstaff, was the manager when Sam was jackarooing there. Her parents rushed to Sam's side when he was taken to Mount Isa Hospital immediately after being injured in a car accident in July 1987. She was only 12-years-old at the time.
